It is important that you take the time to carefully prepare your top for quilting.  Here are some guidelines:

*Please keep in mind that the goal is to have your quilt top lay as flat and smooth as possible.

For the Quilt Top:

  • Trim any threads on your quilt (the ones underneath can show though and the ones on top can catch on the machine).
  • Repair any loose seams.
  • Square up your top (contact me if you need instructions).

  • Press your top well, pressing the seams flat. (you can open the seam allowances a bit to reduce bulk)

  • Please ensure that your borders are flat.  If not, remove them, re-measure your quilt in several places, and  then reattach them.  Any fullness will result in tucks or pleats.  Believe me, it will not "quilt out".

  • If your quilt has a direction, please indicate the top with a safety pin.

  • If your quilt is pieced to the edge, please stitch 1/8 to 1/4 inch in from the edge around the entire quilt.

  • Please wait until the quilt is returned to you to attach any embellishments, buttons, beads, etc., these too will catch on the machine.

Backing Fabric:

  • Backing material should be 100% cotton.

  • The backing fabric that you send to me must be AT LEAST 8 inches larger than your quilt top on ALL 4 SIDES.  (I usually purchase a half yard more than the size of the quilt.)  I know this sounds extreme, but the extra fabric is needed to attach it to the machine, and it allows room to make sure the back is on the striaght of grain.

  • Wide fabrics are readily available in a variety of designs and colors.  I highly recommend that you check them out.  Also, I would be happy to direct you to places to purchase them, or I can provide them as well.  See my pricing page for more information.

  • If your backing is pieced, please avoid seaming together selvages.  It will not be flat.  Instead, please trim or tear off the selvages or, and sew the fabric together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  Then press the seams open to avoid bulk.

  • Square backing...tearing is best.

  • Press well.

  • If your backing is directional, please indicate that as well.

Batting:

  • If you are providing the batting, please allow 6 inches larger than quilt top.
  • I have batting available for purchase.  See pricing page.

Fees will be added for any preparations that you have not completed.  Otherwise, your quilt will be completed in the condition I received.

Before you send your quilt:

While you have your quilt all laid out, Take some time to look over it and get some ideas about the designs that you might want quilted onto it.  Please make some notes and/or sketches and attach to the work order form.

T-shirts

T-shirts to be pieced into a quilt need to be prewashed without fabric softener.  Then you will need to go through each or them and decide if there are any that you would like to have both sides of the shirt included in the quilt.  Please indicate which pieces you would like to have in your quilt with a safety pin.

Contact me for further instructions on t-shirt preparations.
